Sedation Dentistry in Gaithersburg & Clarksburg, MD

Some people put off the dentist for a year. Some put it off for a decade. We hear both, often, and neither one surprises us. Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people go without care. Sedation is how we get past that. Depending on what you need, it might be as light as breathing through a mask for a few minutes, or as involved as sleeping through a long procedure. What it means in every case is that the appointment you have been dreading becomes one you can actually sit through.

What to Expect: Safety, Comfort, and Conscious Sedation

Nitrous Oxide: Gentle, Fast-Acting Relief for Mild Anxiety

Nitrous oxide is a mild, inhaled option delivered through a small nose mask. As you breathe the gas, you feel your body relax and tension ease while remaining fully conscious and able to communicate with our team throughout the appointment.

Who benefits from nitrous oxide?

This option works best for patients with mild to moderate anxiety, sensitivity to dental sounds, or a preference to stay fully aware during treatment. We can also discuss this gentle option for children during their routine visits.

The sedative leaves your system within minutes of removing the mask, so you can typically drive yourself home and resume your normal routine right away. To ask how nitrous oxide fits into your next appointment, call our office at (301) 216-1780.

Oral Conscious Sedation: A Deeper Level of Relaxation

Oral conscious sedation involves a prescribed medication taken about an hour before your appointment. This option gives patients who need something stronger than nitrous oxide a deeper state of relaxation. While you remain awake and cooperative, you will feel exceptionally relaxed and drowsy, and most patients remember little of the procedure afterward.

Because the medication temporarily affects coordination, a responsible adult must drive you to our office, stay during the visit, and take you home. The effects typically last two to four hours after the appointment.

Oral sedation is a strong fit for patients with:

Our doctors review your medical history and current prescriptions carefully during your initial consultation before recommending this option.

IV Sedation for Complex Procedures and Severe Anxiety

Nitrous oxide is a mild, inhaled option delivered through a small nose mask. As you breathe the gas, you feel your body relax and tension ease while remaining fully conscious and able to communicate with our team throughout the appointment.

Who benefits from nitrous oxide?

For intense dental anxiety or lengthy procedures, Tong Dental Care provides intravenous (IV) sedation as part of our sedation dentistry in Gaithersburg, MD. This method delivers medication directly into a vein for a deeper state of relaxation than oral or inhaled options. You remain conscious and responsive but completely at ease, with little to no memory of your treatment afterward.

Our trained clinical team closely monitors your oxygen levels, heart rate, and vitals throughout the entire appointment. Because of the deeper sedative effect, you must follow pre-operative instructions and arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and assist during recovery.
